Federal Location Monitoring (FLM)
Once home confinement enters the conversation, you or your loved one may start to hear about FLM, or Federal Location Monitoring.
Home confinement from the First Step Act, which is contingent on accumulation of Federal Time Credits, and Second Chance Act, which is community confinement for 10% of the total sentence, is administered by the BOP Halfway House Community Partners.
Now, this is ideally the case. When the Halfway House is more than 100 miles from home, you may be eligible for Federal Location Monitoring, or FLM. This would essentially replace your halfway house time with extra days on home confinement with an ankle monitor, where BOP employees would remotely track your location and ensure the inmate is staying within the bounds of their schedule.
This recommendation must come from the RRM, which results from a recommendation from the case manager in federal prison.
This is why it’s important to be kind to your case manager while you’re incarcerated. Otherwise, they won’t do favors for you like setting up FLM.
