If Your Loved One’s Case Manager Isn’t Doing Their Job, Should You Call?

Calling your loved one’s case manager in federal prison is a horrible idea.

We understand that when you have a loved one in federal prison, you want to advocate for them. Most men in federal prison go to their loved ones on the phone for support, and you want to help them because of the vulnerable position they are in.

But, understand that if you call a case manager or counselor in federal prison, they’re just going to yes ma’am or yes sir you, and then totally ignore what you just said. If they perceive your attempts at help as harassment, they will move your loved one’s information to the bottom of the pile, just making a bad situation worse.

That delayed halfway house placement will get kicked even further down the road.

Truth be told, and as messed up as it sounds, an inmate only needs one day of halfway house to satisfy the court. If you make a case manager or counselor angry, that’s exactly what your loved one will get.

Even having someone else advocate on your behalf can cause more harm than good. When Kyle Sandler was in Montgomery, he knew a young guy there named Danny. He was a Mormon – and as it happened, since he wasn’t getting very much halfway house time, his family reached out to Mitt Romney.

Mitt Romney himself called the inmate’s unit team to ask for maximum halfway house placement, and instead Danny ended up with exactly one day. Yes, unit teams are that bitter, running on a consistent power and ego trip.

Further, let’s face the facts. When your loved one went to federal prison, he was a grown man. You wouldn’t call his office to tell his boss anything. As much as you might want to, in most cases it’s best to bite your tongue and let your loved one handle it. You could also consider talking to your Congressman or filing a complaint with the OIG.
