Civil Unrest & Prison Lockdowns
There are a lot of inmates in federal prison who haven’t been there for very long; now, many inmates who experienced COVID lockdowns and/or the unrest following the George Floyd incident have already been released to halfway house, home confinement, or their sentence has ended.
In the past five years, there’s only been one nationwide lockdown in the federal prison system following the death in Beaumont, which led to a temporary lockdown across the entire federal prison system.
But, when civil unrest makes headlines, many prisons choose to lock down as a precaution to prevent similar chaos within prison populations. This is important to consider when looking at the riots surrounding ICE activity in metropolitan areas.
USP Lee Thompson, Florence, Coleman and Beaumont are known to lock down at the slightest provocation.
The administrations at those federal prisons may use these current events to justify lockdowns, especially if they escalate. When we hear about lockdowns anywhere in the country as a result, we will try to report it to you as quickly as possible.
