Seen here and in the video above is the sentencing guideline table.
If you’re headed to federal prison or just recently got indicted in the federal court, it’s important to know that the sentencing guideline table is not what determines the security level of the institution in which you’ll be incarcerated.
This only determines how long your sentence will likely be.
The number on the horizontal axis (left to right) corresponds with your criminal history. If this is your first offense, you will be in category 0 or 1.
The vertical axis (up and down) shows the range in months you will likely be sentenced. Every increase in two points represents an approximate 17% increase in the total sentence. These points are based on your instant offense or offenses.
Most people don’t understand that these numbers have nothing to do with whether or not you’re headed to a camp, FCI low, FCI medium, or, (hopefully not) a USP.
The bulk of inmates actually go to FCI lows – in order of population, followed by minimums, mediums, then USPs at approximately 9%.
The score you need to see where you’ll likely go is your custody score. You can use the custody score calculator at prisonprofessors.com to find this.
Yes, it gets confusing. This is why you want a good federal prison consultant in your corner. If you’re looking for a good federal prison consultant, give us a call at 407-434-0175.
We can also recommend the Legal Advocacy Center or Federal Prison Authority as competent organizations who won’t price gouge you and your family.
