One Singular Line Item For The BOP
As you’ve probably heard by now, the Big Beautiful Bill was passed this week in Congress and now will be enacted into law.
It has a lot of tax provisions and political consequences we won’t get into.
The one thing it gives the federal prison system is $5,000,000,000. Five billion dollars.
Three billion is allocated to employees: employee retention, bonuses, things like that. The other two billion is allotted for infrastructure repairs to the 122 federal prison facilities. This could include reactivating the federal prison in Dublin, California, and possible some of the federal prison camps that were previously slated to close in last December’s announcement, such as FCI Morgantown in West Virginia.
Rumors circulated that there were riders in the bill which could augment the First Step Act, or aspects of the Sentencing Guidelines. These rumors are unfortunately untrue.
There’s nothing about the First Step Act, nothing about changing career offender enhancements, nothing about 924(c), just five billion dollars.
