How Good Will A Lawyer Perform That Isn’t Being Paid At All
Now that DOGE has completely imploded what does this mean for government oversight? Federal Prison Tips has received documentation confirming that CJA Appointed attorneys for federal defendants facing federal prison that can’t use the Federal Defender’s Office will not be paid until October 2025 when the government begins it’s next fiscal year.
In otherwords the budget for CJA appointments for fiscal year 2025 has completely dried up.
Now, CJA appointed attorneys are expected to provide a good defense for federal defendants without a paycheck and the worry that October will come around and perhaps there still may be some kind of budget short fall.
What is a CJA Appointed Attorney?
A CJA appointed attorney is an private practicing criminal defense attorney that is called on to handle cases for the federal defenders office when a federal defender can’t provide counsel. This happens more often than you think.
When is a CJA Appointed Attorney Used?
The courts appoint a CJA attorney in cases where more than one co-defendant is being represented by the federal defenders office. For example when there is a conspiracy with more than one co-defendant needing appointed counsel, only one codefendant on that conspiracy can use an actual attorney out of the federal defenders office. The remaining defendants on the same case must have CJA appointed attorneys whether that’s one additional defendant or ten.
Another prime example of a CJA appointment is when someone decides to 5k or rule 35 on someone else. The person they are snitching on can not be represented by the federal defenders office if the snitch is also represented by the federal defenders office. One way defendants facing federal prison know someone is about to snitch on them is when all of the sudden they’re moved to a CJA appointed attorney.
What Does This Mean?
It means exactly what you think it means, the justice department is holding back payment on all CJA appointed attorneys. It appears that attorneys who actually work in the federal defenders office are going to continue to get paid, however, CJA appointed attorneys now must wait until October to get their “back pay”.

One response to “EXCLUSIVE: CJA Appointed Lawyers NOT GETTING PAID”
I just completed 2cFSA classes to put me below 40 points making me a low recidivism, but they scored me on June 23,2025.
My outdate is May of ’26 before my FSA credits.
I have 89 days earned not being applied. I am told they can’t restore me until October 23, 2025
