What About The Rumors Regarding Pure Vs. Mixed Methamphetamine In The Sentencing Guidelines?

There is no change in the “ice” law for inmates in federal prison or defendants facing federal prison. This was not fake news or unexpected the Sentencing Commission did propose a change that would have greatly impacted those in federal prison on ice (the drug) charges but it was left out of the April vote

What Happened With The Sentencing Commission Amendment Regarding Methampetamines?

Circulating rumors concerning a change in how pure vs. mixed methamphetamine, or “ice” is charged are unfortunately untrue, but this wasn’t exactly fake news, either.

There was a proposed amendment to the United States Sentencing Guidelines earlier this year. The proposed amendment called for eliminating the disparity between pure ice and mixed ice, which would have resulted in a four-point downward departure for inmates in federal prison, and defendants facing federal prison under pure ice standards, but actually had a mixed substance.

The amendment was proposed by Carlton Reeves, but when they voted to promulgate the amendments in April, 2025, it was completely skipped over.

Now, the next cycle of amendments is listed on the U.S. Sentencing Commission website.

If you have a loved one in federal prison, please find the United States Sentencing Commission website on your search engine of choice and voice your opinion about those considered amendments, because they are looking for public comment.

Hopefully next year we’ll see significant change with the next set of amendments.
