If you have a loved one in Federal Prison you’re probably beginning to learn how the “unit team” and most BOP case managers operate. Unfortunately, it’s not the way we would like. It’s hard to get a straight answer on halfway house.

So many Federal inmates hear from their case managers that they have been “put in” for halfway house. Weeks and weeks go by and there’s no more discussion about it. After a month or two the inmate starts to wonder what’s really going on, and so do their loved ones on the street.

The only way to know that you’ve really been put in for halfway house is when you’ve signed the “halfway house” packet. This packet has 5 different places for your signature and you are not actually put in for halfway house until you’ve signed for it.

Undoubtedly your next question will be how long after signing the packet will you have your date. The short answer is there is no telling, but it typically takes between 4-6 weeks.

After you sign the paperwork your case manager signs behind you. Next, your case manager gives it to your unit manager for their signature and then your unit manager gives it to the Case Management Coordinator (CMC) for their signature. Once the CMC has signed off it still needs to go to the AW and the Warden. Finally, it goes off compound to the RRM (Regional Reentry Manager) who has final say on working with the halfway house to get a date. Again, typically, that takes 4-6 weeks.
