Congresswoman Is Fed Up With BOP’s Management During Shutdown
Congresswoman Summer Lee of Pennsylvania is demanding answers from the director of the federal prison system, William K. Marshall III. In a statement posted on her website today directed to the director of the BOP, the Congresswoman wants to know specifically if the quality of inmates’ living conditions are declining because of the government shutdown.
The letter details the fact that in previous government shutdowns, the BOP has resorted to persistent lockdowns to solve staffing shortage issues – but worse, this time, it seems that medical care is seeing corners cut this time as well.
Congresswoman Summer Lee wants answers, and following numerous reports from prisons across the country, she wants to know that inmates in federal prison are still receiving adequate medical care throughout the government shutdown.
In her letter, she notes that the BOP has previously resorted to using solitary confinement and prolonged institution-wide lockdowns during government shutdowns, restricted or eliminated access to mandatory care and programming, and more.
Many of the conditions the BOP puts forth during shutdowns creates dangerous circumstances for at-risk inmates.
We anxiously await a response from Billy Marshall, and we’ll report when we get an answer. Follow us on TikTok above and share your thoughts.
