It’s Aimed At Making Reentry Easier

Representatives Barry Moore (AL-R) and Herb Conway (NJ-D) have introduced a bipartisan bill to solve a big problem. It’s called the Bureau of Prisons Release Card ID Act.

The idea is to give inmates, upon their release, a federal ID card that will be nationally recognized and valid for 18 months. It would also meet REAL ID standards.

This would help tremendously with making the reentry process smooth, especially for inmates whose Bureau of Prisons (BOP) ID cards went missing or expired through the duration of their incarceration.

On top of the fact that many places don’t even recognize BOP ID cards in the first place, passage of this bill could make getting a job after release less of a hassle than it needs to be.

Passage would create an ID card that can be used for much more than just getting on a plane or a Greyhound bus.
