From Bad To Worse: The Big Beautiful Bill Will Reduce Access To Healthcare In Prison

There’s Beckley, Hazelton, Yankton, Beaumont, and so many more. More than two thirds of federal prisons across the country are in rural areas and rural communities.

Some of the communities that house federal prisons rely on that prison for employment.

A new report from the Prison Policy Initiative highlights some of the things in the Big Beautiful Bill that will cause several rural hospitals across America to close. Many of these hospitals are in areas where federal prisons are already struggling with receiving adequate healthcare.

If you have an inmate in federal prison who has any kind of health concern, chances are you’ve been struggling to see your person get the kind and manner of healthcare they need.

Now, with the passage of the Big Beautiful Bill, several rural hospitals will have to scale back operations or close entirely. More than half of state and federal prisons across the country are in rural areas, and two-thirds of those federal prisons are in rural areas at risk of losing the closest hospital that serves the inmate population.

A big thanks to the Prison Policy Initiative for publishing these findings. Regardless of your political affiliation, it’s important to stay on top of how specific bills will affect the prison population. It is unfortunately this group of Americans who falls through the cracks time and time again, on either side of the aisle.
