After Doing Time Himself, Jelly Roll Gives Back To The Incarcerated

Some celebrities support the justice impacted because they think it’s cool or the “in thing” to do. Not country and hip hop sensation Jelly Roll. The 39 year old, Jelly Roll, did time himself on drug charges and now goes an extra mile (or hundreds) to help the incarcerated or those who’ve struggled after incarceration.

Whenever Jelly Roll’s tour stops in a new city, he makes sure that he and his team visit a local jail, halfway house or homeless shelter. Once there they do q&a, learn about the inmates, perform and even do sing-a-longs.

Such is the case at a tour stop in Charlottesville at the beginning of the month. It was on that tour stop that Jelly stopped by a county jail about an hour outside of the venue.

That particular county jail has a drug abuse program called “Harp” that has a focus on music. In fact, last year, Jelly’s charity donated musical instruments to the same program.

This year, after a concert the inmates performed for the superstar, he was completely moved. Some of the inmates had taken Jelly’s new song “Un Pretty” and made a remix of it, that reflected their own struggles with jail and addiction.

Jelly was so moved that on the way back to the venue he called the Sheriff of the local jail and asked if a few of the inmates might be able to go to the show, even if it was just for an hour. According to Jelly Roll the Sheriff enthusiastically agreed, he even went as far as to dress the inmates out in “street clothes”.

Four of the inmates performed a hip hop mashup of unpretty on the stage of Jelly Roll’s sold out Charlottesville show. It was actually the most moving thing I have ever seen on social media.

Check out our tiktok above that features a clip from that performance.
