There Are Over 130 FSA Programs Available In Federal Prison

The First Step Act of 2018 was passed in December 2018, over seven years ago. The BOP is currently working on implementing all of the intracacies of the program. The foundations of the First Step Act (FSA) are an inmates participation in Evidence Based Recidivism Reducing Programs and other Productive Activities. The law (PL 115-391) says that for every 30 days an inmate participates in these programs, they earn “earned time credits”. The law goes onto say that inmates that are deemed “low or minimum” recidivism, can redeem those credits at a rate of 15 days for every 30 days they participated. Inmates with a high or medium recidivism score earn at a rate of 10 days per every 30 however as of now inmates with medium or high recidivism have not been allowed to redeem those days by the BOP itself.

The Bureau of Prisons offers over 130 different programs that qualify as either EBRR’s or PA’s and receive FSA credit. They release an updated “programs guide” every quarter which details each and every FSA eligible program, what the program entails and which institutions actually offer that program.

You can download the latest program guide here from our website.

Participating in these progams is the key to earning these credits which are reducing sentences to between 48-52% for those who participate and maintain clear conduct.
