In Most States Voting Rights Restore Automatically When Completely Discharged

There is a common misconception across the United States that felons can’t vote. Many felons can’t vote while they are in prison, however there are even three states that allow felons to vote absentee and those are Vermont, Maine and Washington State.

Most of the remaining 47 states allow felons to vote. The rules vary state to state because restoration of rights is actually a state issue and not a federal issue, even restoring the right to bare arms.

As far as voting goes let’s use the example of Florida where Federal Prison Tips is based. In Florida a felon can vote if everything is completely discharged. That means they are no longer in jail or prison, and they are not on parole or probation. A felon with felony charges in another state must basically apply Florida rules to that felony and abide by those rules. For most felons in Florida voting rights restore automatically. However, sex offenders must petition the Governor.

If you’ve watched my tiktok videos you’ve probably seen me wearing Trump t-shirts. I get asked about that a lot because most people also know I’m openly gay. I am voting for Trump because I was the 8th man out of the BOP under the First Step Act of 2018. If you remember that time, not only did Trump fight several “tough on crime” Congressmen like Joe Biden, but he also fought Mitch McConnell tooth and nail to bring it to a vote.

The First Step Act was championed by President Trump’s son in law Jared Kushner after his father did time at FPC Montgomery.
