Despite Some Rumors On Social Media, Federal Charges Can Show Up.

The biggest obstacle in re-entry for any felon, or anyone coming out of any prison for that matter, is finding a job. There are websites out there, that specialize in jobs for felons, like honestjobs.com but even that isn’t a guarantee.

When I was preparing for re-entry after my revocation of supervised release, I had decided that in addition to prison consulting I wanted to also hold a “W2” part time job, as well. To that end, I applied for 347 jobs, went on 16 interviews and was preliminarily hired 6 different times. All of the jobs were eventually rescinded because of my criminal past. What’s worse for me is that I never tried to hide it. My felony convictions are on my resume, on my LinkedIn and on my Indeed profile. It’s not my fault they don’t read those things. I own my crime.

Recently, there has been some debate as to whether Federal charges actually show up on a background report. As confusing as it may sound, the answer is “they can”. Companies can opt in to have Federal records checked. Or, as in most cases with me, they see my address history and dig a little deeper. Still, there are other companies that always return federal information, such as the background investigation company, Chekr. (as seen in the above video).

For some people, what becomes extremely discouraging is that Donald Trump with is 34 felony convictions, is able to be President of the United States, and many of us can’t even work for Door Dash.

One alternative is entrepreneurship. Something that I really believe in is that federally indicted drug dealers are just really good entrepreneurs selling an illegal product. There are organizations out there that are specifically charged with helping reduce recidivism through entrepreneurship, like razowiremedia.com and ReFy Ventures.

Entrepreneurship isn’t just about apps and technology. The inmate that wants to start his own hot shot trucking business, or her own beauty salon, is also an entrepreneur.

But as to Federal charges coming up on Background checks, the proof is in the video at the top of the page. That particular rejection was for something as innocuous as Door Dash.
