Political Prisoner Steve Bannon Was NOT FSA Eligible
Sometimes it’s tough being a Republican along side people like Steve Bannon who simply couldn’t read the actual First Step Act of 2018 (PL 115-391). As ex-Trump political strategist Bannon prepared to leave the Federal Prison in Danbury Connecticut last week the Internet went crazy suggesting that for political reasons he was deprived of his First Step Credit that would have allowed him to leave, not a week early, but rather 3 weeks early.
For the first six months an eligible inmate is in Federal Prison, the BOP has interpreted the FSA incorrectly and only allows them to earn at a rate of 10 days per month. So in theory if Bannon were eligible, having a four month sentence he would have earned 3 weeks in the first 3 months and in the fourth month would have left after that first week.
Steve Bannon Was Not Eligible For First Step Act
One of the caveats of the First Step Act as devised by Congress, and signed by his “buddy” Donald Trump, is that an inmate needed, or MUST have a term of supervision after release to apply the credits to. Bannon did not.
Bannon did not have a term of supervised release because he was on a contempt charge.
So there you have it. Bannon was never eligible for First Step Act credit.
